Approved
Most applications are approved within 1-2 business days you'll receive your ABN and it'll show as active on the Australian Business Register (ABR).
Pending
Sometimes the Australian Business Register needs to manually check some of your details before approving your application. If this happens, you'll be given a reference number instead of an ABN on the spot.
This review can take up to 20 business days
You don't need to do anything unless the ABR request for more information.
Rejected
An application can be refused if the ABR isn't satisfied you're entitled to an ABN. Common reasons include:
The application suggests you're working as an employee or contractor, rather than running a business
Your business activity description is too vague
Details provided don't match other records (e.g. your identity or business details)
A previous ABN linked to you or your entity was cancelled, and the issue hasn't been addressed
